Dental crowns & bridges in Hungary: cost and the multi-crown maths

By Márk, founder · Updated 18 July 2026 · guide prices in £ and CA$

Crowns are where the trip maths gets interesting: one crown never justifies flying — we'll say that plainly — but UK and Canadian treatment plans quoting four, six or eight crowns are exactly where Hungary's price gap turns a frightening invoice into a manageable one, in a single visit.

Guide ranges from published private price lists, 2026. The multi-crown maths: six zirconia crowns ≈ £5,400–£7,200 in the UK vs £1,700–£2,500 in Hungary plus £500–£900 of trip — a saving of roughly £3,000–£4,500 in one week.

The one-visit timeline

  1. Before flying: X-ray and photos → written plan stating which teeth, which material, and whether any tooth needs root canal treatment or a post first — surprises here are a red flag, so insist the plan is specific.
  2. Days 1–2: preparation and impressions or digital scans; temporaries fitted so you're never walking around with prepared teeth showing.
  3. Days 3–6: the in-house lab builds; root canals slot into these days where the plan calls for them. You're at the baths between appointments.
  4. Days 6–8: try-in, bite adjustment, cementation. One visit, finished.

Materials, honestly compared

  • Zirconia — the modern default: metal-free, strong enough for molars, convincing aesthetics. Worth its premium almost everywhere in the mouth.
  • Porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) — the older workhorse: cheaper, durable, but the metal substructure can show as a dark line at the gum as years pass. A fair economy choice for back teeth; think twice for your smile line.
  • Pressed ceramic (lithium disilicate) — the aesthetic pick for front teeth, where its translucency shines; not the first choice for heavy-load molars.

The honest principle: material per tooth, not per price list. A clinic recommending zirconia everywhere without discussing your bite, your budget and which teeth show is reading a menu at you.

When is a crown even the right answer?

A crown is major restoration — the tooth is reshaped to receive it. It's the right answer for heavily filled, cracked, root-treated or badly worn teeth. It is not the answer for cosmetic upgrades on healthy teeth (that's the veneer conversation, and the distinction matters enormously) — and a missing tooth poses the real fork: a bridge crowns the neighbours to hold a replacement (fast, no surgery, but it commits those neighbours), while an implant leaves the neighbours alone at a higher price and a two-visit timeline. If the neighbouring teeth need crowns anyway, bridges are pragmatic; if they're healthy, protect them. Any clinic, anywhere, should be able to argue both options against its own revenue — that's the test.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a crown cost in Hungary?

Zirconia typically £280–£420 (about CA$480–$720) against £800–£1,200 in the UK; porcelain-fused-to-metal £200–£300 against £500–£900. One crown doesn't justify a trip — four or more clears the travel costs several times over.

How long do crowns take in Hungary?

One visit of 5–8 days: preparation and scans early, in-house lab fabrication mid-week, try-in and cementation at the end. Root canals and posts, where the written plan calls for them, fit inside the same window.

Which crown material should I choose?

Zirconia is the modern default almost everywhere; PFM is the fair economy choice for back teeth (watch the gum-line grey over time); pressed ceramic excels on front teeth. The honest rule: material per tooth, not per price list.

Crown or bridge for a missing tooth?

A bridge crowns the neighbouring teeth to hold a replacement — one visit, no surgery, but it commits those neighbours. An implant leaves them untouched at a higher price and two visits. Neighbours needing crowns anyway → bridge is pragmatic; healthy neighbours → think hard before grinding them.
